In this course, you will build a new presentation using the PowerPoint Design Templates option.

To do so, you can select the On my computer... option from the Task pane.

The Design Templates suggest a design, but offer no content.

You can preview any of the templates before selection, by simply clicking on the one you want.

Let's preview the Blends template, which has a plain background.

The type of output you require should dictate your design choice.

For instance, a complicated coloured background might look good in an onscreen slide show, but is inappropriate for printed output.

Let's use the Satellite Dish design for our presentation.

You simply click on the OK button to confirm your choice.

With the presentation design selected, we can start building the individual slides.

A new slide icon has been added to the Outline pane for the first slide in our new presentation and PowerPoint has allocated Presentation2 as the temporary name on the Title bar.

The pre-designed layouts that we are using offer placeholders that you can simply click on to help you to add the components of your slides. The current slide has two placeholders, the first for entering a title.

When selected, placeholders appear as a rope border with eight small white boxes around the perimeter.

Let's enter the title JIT Communications.

The second placeholder on the Title slide is where you enter a sub-title.

The title and sub-title text that we entered into the placeholders is reflected in the Outline pane.

It has been automatically formatted and positioned on the slide in accordance with the pre-set layout we selected.

Let's select the title placeholder.

Dragging one of the eight white-box handles that appear on the border will resize the title, while dragging one of the borders allows you to move the title.

When you position the mouse pointer over a border, it changes shape to a black four-headed arrow that indicates that a drag action will move the placeholder in any direction.

When you drag a border, an outline is displayed to indicate the current location.

Let's move the title to the top of the slide, by dragging its top border.

As you experiment with designing slides, you will of course make some mistakes.

If you change your mind on an action that you have performed, you can cancel it by simply clicking on the Undo button.

Undo reverses the last action that you made, so it has returned the title to its original position.

By default, it remembers up to twenty previous actions, although this number can be changed using the Options command on the Tools menu.

If you want to reverse an action, it is wise to use Undo immediately.

Let's de-select the title.

You can add a new slide to a presentation by selecting the New Slide command from either the Insert menu or the Common Tasks menu.

You can also simply click on the New Slide button.

The Bulleted List AutoLayout also contains two placeholders.

The first is for the list title, and the second for the list itself.

Let's enter the title Main Events, and then move to the list placeholder.

Let's enter the first event, which will be a Telecommunications Show.

When entering a Bulleted list, you are automatically taken to the next entry when you press the Enter key to confirm the previous entry.

Let's enter the next item, which is Mobile Communication.

For convenience, we will also add Satellite Navigation to the list when you do.

Having entered the list items that we require, let's de-select the placeholder.

So far, we have entered text into the two slides that we have created.

The Insert menu allows you to insert a wide variety of objects such as Microsoft Word tables, Microsoft Excel worksheets, Charts, Graphics, and ClipArt.
